The Dominican School of Cebu Inc. is one of the institutions owned and administered by the CRMSD. Its building’s architectural design is patterned after that of the Dominican College Sta. Rosa City (Laguna). Within eight months of construction from January 23, 2007, the four-storey building was ready for occupancy. It houses the administrative offices, classrooms from Kindergarten to Grade 6, some function rooms like Faculty Room, Guidance Center, Learning Resource Center, Home Economics Center, Cafeteria, IT Laboratory, Science Laboratory, Health and Wellness Center, Chapel, Sister’ Convent and guest rooms. Additional classrooms are in place.
September 07, 2007 marked the blessing of the school, highlighted by a Eucharistic Celebration solemnized by the Archbishop of Cebu, Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal, D.D. assisted by Fr. Laurentino Garcia, O.P. and Fr. Arturo Sanchez, SBD. Blessing of the different areas of the school building was done simultaneously by the Reverend Fathers. The Prioresses and members of the CRMSD, friends, guests, teachers, parents and students graced the occasion.
The operation started during AY 2007-2008 having been recognized by the Department of Education Region 7. Initially, it had an enrolment of 114 from Kindergarten to Grade 4.
On its second year of operation, AY 2008-2009, the substantive increase in enrolment accommodated Grades 5 & 6 pupils totaling 235. To meet the needs of the growing population, several improvements were completed. Among these were the construction and landscaping of the waiting area, the concreting of the campus road to ease the entrance or exit of the school community members and the refurbishing of the different function rooms.
During the AY 2009-2010, First and Second Year High School were admitted totaling 368. This necessitated the construction of additional facilities; football field, basketball court, workshop, extension of wet laboratory, library, and greenhouse. To complement an effective teaching-learning process, procurement of instructional materials, multimedia equipment, and professional books was prioritized.
AY 2010-2011 offers a complete Integrated Basic Education. The second phase of the construction of the building also commenced to suffice the present demands of an increased student population.
AY 2014-2015, DS Covered Court was constructed to provide a venue for the different co-curricular and extra-curricular activities of the students. It was further improved by installing bleachers, rubberized flooring, and motorized basketball goal.
During AY 2015-2016, Dominican School of Cebu piloted the use of E-books in the Junior High School Department. This is to uphold its mission to give quality and fun-filled education. LCD projectors were also provided in every classroom to promote better learning experience among students. It was also during this year that the installation of St. Dominic pedestal and landscaping was done to give honor and tribute to the school’s patron saint.
AY 2016-2017, in support to the Senior High School with STEM as its chosen strand to offer, the school added more laboratory apparatuses and equipment like optical bench, rail cart system, Hooke’s Law and others to ensure its efficiency in carrying out the new implemented curriculum. It was also during this school year that the Educational Service Contracting (ESC) of PEAC granted the school a total of 50 slots which means that 50 students enjoyed a government subsidy of P8,500 every school year from Grade 7 until Grade 10.
AY 2017-2018, additional school campus development and beautification were undertaken such as cementing of the pathway and the construction of the covered walk to the gym to provide convenience to the students, parents and the entire school community.
AY 2018-2019, Department of Education granted the school a Temporary Permit to offer the ABM strand to its Senior High School for A.Y. 2019-2020. It was also during this school year that the ESC increased its allocation from 50 to 80 slots and the subsidy from P8,500 to P9,000 per year.
AY 2020-2021, a nightmare of COVID-19 Pandemic, Dominican School resorted to on-line learning instructions just like other schools. The school pushed through with its project- the construction of the new Senior High School Building. With the absence of students in the school campus, the construction went well.
AY 2021-2022, Dominican School thrived with on-line learning instruction, though difficult in the part of both the learners and teachers, yet the year ended smoothly.
AY 2022-2023, Dominican School challenged the Face-to—Face instruction. Having been out of the school campus for two consecutive years, it was a real challenge on the part of the students as they seemed to be lost in the wilderness of learning as they faced the reality of F2F learning environment. Though after some time, they were able to adjust to such new environment.
The newly constructed Senior High School building though unfinished became functional. It has six rooms in the second floor, four rooms are used as classrooms, one as the SHS Library and one for the Guidance Office which was relocated to this building. The ground floor housed the Activity Room, where school activities that need bigger spaces are held. Likewise, Holy Masses are celebrated here with few attendees are also held.
The hard work invested on the application for the opening of GAS Strand had been paid off as DepEd granted the school the necessary permit. Hence, GAS Strand is now open to Senior High Schoolers!
The Science Laboratory had remarkably improved through purchases of more equipment and tools. And, the School library has new acquisitions of reading books and learning materials.
AY 2023-2024, with relatively few students, Dominican School took advantage of create a new culture of the school, that of discipline. The school started to impose strictly rules on discipline as prescribed in the Student Manual to create an environment more conducive to learning. There was a significant resistance on the part of some students and teachers but as time passed by, everyone got used to it— and a new environment had emerged. Now, the students appreciated the change. This collaborative effort between teachers and students established an ambience of harmony and respect.
To improve the school’s physical plant, the vacant lot across the school gymnasium was made into a mini-park where students spent time along the vicinity whenever time gave them opportunity. Likewise, the children’s playground was renovated with few park amenities being installed. Other school improvements included the renovation of the school canteen and the kitchen. It’s now giving more space for the students to move with ease and the canteen personnel to work comfortably. To catch the public’s attention, the existing school signage was replaced with a new signage with built-in light. This new lighted signage gives a new appeal to the school’s entrance gate.
DS Cebu aims to promote a tradition of excellence where both the faculty and the students strive to be the best. It offers enjoyable learning experiences harnessing the students’ high level of interest and multiple intelligences, the acquisition of knowledge and skills, a keen understanding of human nature and human relationship and the freedom of choice within the bounds of reason. It envisions to develop integrated, competent, and morally upright young men and women witnessing the truth in the service of country and fellowmen, especially the less privileged.
The CRMSD hopes that by venturing into the field of education, it will also achieve its mission of evangelization.
